Three commercial kits for the detection of antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 at the same time were compared in terms of their sensitivity and specificity. The three reagents adopted the principle of microplate enzyme immunoassay (EIA) method and were
Genetic system (Genetic Systems corporation, Redmond, WA, U. S. A.), Behring Enzygnost anti-HIV1/-HIV2 (Behringwerke, Marburg, Germany) and Genedia (Green Cross Inc., Seoul, Korea).
All the results of Genedia EIA were completely concordant with those of Western blot test, i. e. 31 positive and 138 negative sera. Behring Enzygnost EIA system showed 3 false positive cases among 34 positive cases (8.8% false positivity), but it
was
considered as acceptable screening test in the low risk area like this country. But, the Genetic system EIA alone for screenig donor blood should be discouraged because it does not detect all the positive sera.
So, it might increase the chances of transfusing HIV positive blood.
A microplate EIA anti-HIV1/-HIV2 test which showed rather sensitive results was considered safe and useful method to screen HIV infection.
